Milton-Freewater Humane Society, Inc.

Welcome

Milton-Freewater Humane Society (MFHS) operates in northeastern Umatilla county, Oregon, in the cities and rural areas around Milton-Freewater, Athena, Weston, and Helix.  We promote spay/neuter and adoption and kindness to animals, including feral cats and wild animals.  We operate Cats Galore, a sanctuary for over 100 feral and stray cats that were collected over the past ten years and were not adopted out for various reasons (did not tame adequately, have chronic health problems, etc.).

We operate the all volunteer thrift store, Nine Lives, at 1008 S. Main Street in Milton-Freewater to support the cat sanctuary (which does not take in new cats) and to provide a sustainable fund for spay/neuter funds for feral cat Trap-Neuter-Return in our area and for subsidizing low-income spay/neuter in our area.

We have worked hard to help establish Trap-Neuter-Return programs in new communities farther and farther away.  However, we feel we have reached beyond our limit of effectiveness after trying to help in areas more than 30 miles away, including our Stanfield project which was recently discontinued before the project was completed.  We are now concentrating close to home working to build a sustainable (without outside funding) maintenance level in our TNR program in Milton-Freewater, Athena, Weston and Helix in northeastern Oregon.

MFHS Current Spay/neuter Programs:

  • Trap-neuter-return funds are currently availble to help subsidize spay/neuter for feral and stray cats in the Milton-Freewater area.  Contact Lyla Lampson at Nine Lives at 541-938-2424 Sunday through Thursdays between 10 am and 6 pm for more information
  • Nine Lives, our fundraising thrift store, is currently funding low-income spay/neuter subsized vouchers for owned cats.  Contact Lyla Lampson at Nine Lives at 541-938-2424 Sunday through Thursdays between 10 am and 6 pm for more information.

2011 News

BREAKING NEWS . . .

  • Due to the many generous donations made to Nine Lives to support MFHS the store is doing very well.  Profits have exceeded $2,400 per month the first five months it has been operating with an all-volunteer workforce.  This is sufficient to fund the cat shelter/sanctuary and provide some spay/neuter funds as well.

  • The first week of February has brought good news on the financial front.  MFHS received a number of grants to help support their spay/neuter efforts.  MFHS was awarded $1,250 by the Gus Hawthorne Foundation (an Oregon-based foundation) for added vet care for their TNR program, $12,000 from Petco ($7,000 for Stanfield TNR and $5,000 for Milton-Freewater area TNR), and $10,000 in general support from Oregon Community

  • MFHS has partnered with Pet Utopia in Pendleton to adopt out cats through Petco in Portland.  19 cats were adopted out from the Milton-Freewater area in Portland in January and early February due to this collaboration.

  • Petco in Walla Walla awarded Cats Galore a $100 gift certificate on January 28, 2012, as well as $790 from Petco Foundation from the Christmas holiday fundraising efforts due to our partnership with Petco to adopt out cats at Petco.  Thank you, Petco!

  • Nine Lives opened October 24 and is open daily every day from 10 am to 6 pm.  Two individuals in addition to Cats Galore have sections within the store selling items by consignment.  There are antiques, collectibles, furniture, and household goods in addition to books, building supplies and yard/garden items.  The phone number of the store is 541-938-2424.  Donations of saleable items are always welcome.

  • ASPCA awarded Milton-Freewater Humane Society, Inc. $5,000 for the purchase of live traps to add to the bank of live traps used in Trap-Neuter-Return in Umatilla County.  These traps and used by both MFHS, Pioneer Humane Society (Pendleton) and Pet Utopia (Pendleton).  The new traps will first be used in a new TNR outreach in Stanfield expected to start in October.

  • In September 2011, in honor of World Rabies Day on September 28, The Global Alliance of Rabies Control and Pfizer donated 250 rabies vaccinations for MFHS for vaccinating 120 cats at Cats Galore shelter and for feral cats spayed/neutered through MFHS programs in the next six months.  Thank you, Pfizer!
